8K vs 4K TV: Do You Really Need 8K?
For almost everyone shopping in 2026, the answer is no: you do not need an 8K TV, and 4K is the sweet spot. 8K packs four times the pixels of 4K, but there is almost nothing made in 8K to watch, and on a normal-sized screen at a normal viewing distance your eyes cannot resolve the extra detail anyway. Unless you are buying a very large screen and sitting close to it, the money is better spent on a stronger 4K set.
Here is the reasoning, and the narrow cases where 8K starts to make sense.
What 8K actually means
8K refers to the pixel count: 7680 by 4320, which is roughly 33 million pixels. That is four times the pixels of a 4K panel (3840 by 2160, about 8.3 million), because you double the pixels along both the width and the height. More pixels means finer detail is possible, but only if two other things line up: there has to be 8K detail in the source, and you have to be able to see it.

Why 4K is still the sweet spot
There is almost no native 8K content. This is the crux of the whole decision. In 2026 there is no mainstream 8K streaming tier, no 8K broadcast TV, and no 8K disc format. The physical media that exists tops out at 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. A handful of demo clips exist on YouTube, and that is close to the extent of it. Buy an 8K TV today and virtually everything you watch, from streaming to free-to-air to your 4K Blu-rays, is upscaled to fill the panel rather than delivered in true 8K.
You need a very large screen and a close seat to perceive the difference. Resolution only helps up to the point where your eye can separate the individual pixels. On typical loungeroom sizes at typical distances, a 4K image is already dense enough that the jump to 8K is invisible. The gap only becomes perceptible on very large screens viewed from close range, which is not how most people watch television. At normal sizes and distances, an 8K panel and a good 4K panel showing the same source look the same.
8K sets cost more, come in a small range, and draw more power. The 8K market is a thin slice of premium models rather than a full lineup, so you pay a premium and choose from fewer options. Driving four times the pixels also uses more energy than an equivalent 4K set.
8K needs HDMI 2.1. To carry an 8K signal at 60 frames per second you need HDMI 2.1 ports at both ends, on the TV and on the source. Older HDMI versions cannot move that much data. It is one more compatibility box to tick for a resolution you will rarely feed with real content.
The upscaling on 8K sets is genuinely capable, and their processors do a decent job of stretching 4K and HD to fill the screen. But upscaling 4K to 8K adds little you can actually see, because the extra detail is being invented rather than captured. Good upscaling is a reason 8K sets look fine, not a reason to buy one.

Where 8K makes marginal sense
There are two situations where 8K is defensible. The first is a genuinely large screen, around 85 inches or more, viewed from a close seat, where you get near enough to the panel for the extra pixel density to register. The second is pure future-proofing when budget is no object and you want the highest specification available regardless of today's content. Neither applies to most buyers, and even in the first case the benefit is modest against a strong 4K set of the same size.
Where to spend the money instead
Resolution is not what separates a mediocre picture from a great one at 4K and above. Brightness, contrast, local dimming and processing do far more visible work. A 4K set with higher peak brightness and better local dimming will beat an 8K set on the picture that actually reaches your eyes, on the content you actually watch.
So put the budget into panel quality rather than pixel count.
