HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1 Explained (Do You Actually Need 2.1?)

HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1 explained: the bandwidth difference, what 2.1 unlocks, who really needs it, and the port and cable gotchas that catch out AU buyers.

For most people, HDMI 2.0 is fine. If you watch movies, stream, use free-to-air, or play older consoles, a 2.0 port does everything you need and paying extra for 2.1 buys you nothing you will use. HDMI 2.1 matters in three cases: you game on a PS5, Xbox Series X or a modern gaming PC and want 4K at 120fps, you are chasing 8K, or you want to send lossless surround audio to a soundbar or receiver over eARC. If none of those is you, stop worrying about the number.

The core difference: bandwidth

The headline number is bandwidth, and it is the reason everything else exists.

HDMI 2.0 carries up to 18 Gbps, which is enough for 4K at 60Hz. That covers nearly all TV, films and streaming, since almost no film or broadcast content runs above 60 frames a second anyway.

HDMI 2.1 lifts that ceiling to 48 Gbps. That extra headroom is what lets a single cable push 4K at 120Hz, or up to 8K at 60Hz. More frames and more pixels mean more data per second, and 2.0 simply runs out of pipe. Everything HDMI 2.1 is known for comes back to that bandwidth jump.

What HDMI 2.1 unlocks

4K at 120fps

This is the one that matters for most buyers who care at all. A PS5, Xbox Series X or a capable gaming PC can output 4K at 120fps in supported games, and you need HDMI 2.1 bandwidth to carry it. You also need a screen that can actually display 120Hz, so the port and the panel have to match. If your TV is a 60Hz set, a 2.1 port on its own does not get you 120fps. 8K at 60Hz

HDMI 2.1 can carry 8K at 60Hz. In practice this is niche: 8K TVs are still a small, pricey slice of the market and there is almost no native 8K content to watch. It is a nice-to-have on the spec sheet rather than a reason to buy today.

VRR and ALLM

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) keeps the TV's refresh in step with the console or PC's frame rate, which removes screen tearing and stutter in games. Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) flips the TV into its low-lag game mode automatically when it detects a console, so you are not digging through menus.

Both are strongly associated with HDMI 2.1, but they are optional parts of the spec and can turn up on sets and ports labelled HDMI 2.0 as well. So do not treat them as a 2.1-only guarantee. If VRR or ALLM matters to you, check that the specific TV lists them rather than assuming the version number covers it. eARC for lossless audio

eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) sends high-bitrate, lossless audio from the TV back to a soundbar or AV receiver over a single HDMI cable. That means full-fat Dolby Atmos via TrueHD and DTS:X, rather than the compressed versions the older ARC could manage. If you run a proper home-theatre setup, this is the feature to look for.

eARC arrived alongside the HDMI 2.1 spec, but it is a common point of confusion because it shows up on plenty of TVs that are otherwise described as HDMI 2.0. Do not assume a set needs a full 2.1 port to give you eARC. Check the audio spec directly, and make sure the port you plug into is the eARC-labelled one.

QMS, QFT and DSC

A few more 2.1 features are worth knowing by name. Quick Media Switching (QMS) and Quick Frame Transport (QFT) cut the brief black-screen blip when content changes frame rate and reduce input lag respectively. Display Stream Compression (DSC) is a near-lossless compression method that helps pack the highest resolution and refresh combinations down the cable. None of these will drive a buying decision on their own, but they are part of what the bandwidth headroom pays for.

Who actually needs HDMI 2.1

  • Current-console or PC gamer chasing 4K at 120fps: yes. You need an HDMI 2.1 port with the bandwidth to match, and a panel that runs at 120Hz.
  • 8K buyer: yes, but this is a small group and there is little content to watch at that resolution yet.
  • Home-theatre owner wanting lossless Atmos to a soundbar or receiver: you want eARC, which many 2.0-labelled sets also carry, so check the audio spec rather than the version badge.
  • Everyone else, for movies, streaming, free-to-air and 4K60: HDMI 2.0 is perfectly fine. There is no picture benefit to paying up for 2.1 you will not use.

Most buyers land in that last group. The reason to reach for 2.1 is a specific feature you will actually use, not a bigger number for its own sake.

Your console still works on an HDMI 2.0 TV

This one worries people, so it is worth clearing up: if your TV only has HDMI 2.0, a PS5 or Xbox Series X still works perfectly. HDMI is backwards compatible, so the console simply runs at the best mode the port supports, which is 4K at 60fps. You still get 4K, HDR and every game exactly as intended. What you miss is the 4K 120fps high-frame-rate mode and the 2.1-dependent extras that go with it. HDMI 2.1 is an upgrade for high-frame-rate gaming, not a requirement to use a current console at all.

The gotchas that catch people out

This is where money gets wasted, so read this bit even if you have decided you want 2.1.

Not every HDMI port on a TV is 2.1. Many sets have only one or two full-bandwidth 2.1 ports, with the rest being 2.0. If you are running a PS5, an Xbox and a gaming PC, count the 2.1 ports before you buy, because one of your devices may end up on a slower port. If a set only has a single 2.1 input, that shapes what you can connect at full quality.

Full 4K120 needs the right cable. The 48 Gbps modes need a certified "Ultra High Speed HDMI" cable. An older "High Speed" cable may connect and even show a picture, but it can fail to carry the top resolution and refresh combinations, which shows up as dropouts, black flashes or a mode that simply refuses to engage. This is a cheap fix and worth getting right: buy a cable that carries the Ultra High Speed certification.

An "HDMI 2.1" badge does not guarantee full 48 Gbps. The way the spec is labelled means a port can be marketed as HDMI 2.1 while only supporting a subset of its features and less than the full bandwidth. So a version badge alone is not proof of 4K120 support. Check the actual stated capability of the port, the maximum bandwidth or the specific features listed, rather than trusting the number on the box.
