OLED vs QLED: Which Is Better for an Australian Buyer?
Neither one is better across the board. OLED gives you the best contrast and the deepest blacks money can buy, so it is hard to beat for movies and in a dim room. QLED is brighter, cheaper to get into, and shrugs off a sunny lounge room without breaking a sweat. Which is "better" comes down to one thing: your room and what you watch in it. Bright, glary space with the footy on all day? Lean QLED. Dark room, movies and prestige TV, and you care about the picture? Lean OLED.
There is a lot of marketing noise around these two names, so before the head-to-head, get the one fact that actually explains every difference below.
The core difference: self-lit pixels vs a backlight
This is the crux, and it is where most of the confusion starts.
OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) is self-emissive. Every single pixel makes its own light and can switch itself completely off. A black part of the picture is a pixel that is literally turned off, so it produces a true, perfect black with no glow. There is no separate backlight.
QLED is not a different kind of panel in the same sense. A QLED is a standard LED-LCD television with a quantum-dot layer added in front of the backlight to boost colour and brightness. The important word is backlight: a QLED is still lit from behind by LEDs, and the LCD layer only ever blocks that light, it cannot turn it off completely. So "black" on a QLED is really a very dimmed backlight, which means some light leaks through. That is why QLED contrast and black levels cannot match OLED, and why bright objects on a dark background can show a faint halo.

Picture quality: contrast and black levels
OLED wins this, clearly. Because each pixel switches off, OLED delivers infinite contrast and true black. Shadow detail, night scenes and star fields look cleaner, with no backlight haze and no blooming around bright objects.
QLED has closed the gap at the top end with local dimming, where the backlight is split into zones that dim independently. The more zones, the better the control. Premium Mini-LED QLED sets (quantum dots plus a Mini-LED backlight with many small dimming zones) get impressively close in a dark room. But zones are still bigger than pixels, so blooming and raised blacks remain possible where a QLED simply cannot match a panel that turns individual pixels off.
Winner: OLED, especially in a dark or dim room.
Brightness and bright-room performance
QLED wins here. A backlit panel can drive far higher peak and sustained brightness than OLED, and quantum dots hold colour well at those high brightness levels. In a bright lounge with windows and lamps, or with sport and daytime TV, a QLED cuts through glare and stays punchy.
OLED is plenty bright for most rooms and its per-pixel contrast makes the picture look bright, but on paper it does not reach the same peak brightness, and very large fully-white scenes are dimmed to protect the panel. If your room is sun-drenched, that matters.
Winner: QLED, especially in a bright room.
Colour
This one is close. Quantum dots were designed to produce a wide, vivid colour range, and QLED holds that saturation at high brightness, which helps with bright HDR highlights. OLED produces extremely accurate, natural colour with the advantage that colour sits on top of perfect black, so it looks richer in darker scenes. Call it a draw that tips to whichever strength suits your content: QLED for bright, punchy HDR, OLED for accuracy and depth.
Winner: draw.
Burn-in: the real risk, in perspective
Burn-in (permanent image retention) is a genuine OLED characteristic and not a QLED one, because it comes from organic pixels ageing unevenly. QLED, being LED-LCD, is not susceptible.
For normal, varied viewing (movies, shows, sport, streaming) modern OLEDs are well protected with pixel shifting, logo dimming and screen refresh routines, and burn-in is unlikely over a normal ownership span. The real risk is static content left on screen for many hours a day, every day: a news ticker, a channel logo, a gaming HUD, or a PC taskbar used as a monitor. If that describes how you would use the TV, QLED removes the worry entirely.
Winner: QLED if you show a lot of static content, otherwise not a deciding factor for most people.
Viewing angles
OLED wins. Because each pixel emits its own light, colour and contrast stay consistent when you sit off to the side. QLED, like all LCDs, tends to lose contrast and colour saturation at an angle, though some premium models add a layer to reduce this at a small cost to head-on contrast. If you have a wide lounge where people watch from the sides, OLED holds up better.
Winner: OLED.
Gaming
Roughly a draw at the top, with QLED cheaper to game on. OLED has an inherent edge in motion clarity thanks to near-instant pixel response, so fast movement looks cleaner. Premium sets of both types support the features that matter for PS5, Xbox Series X and PC: 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low latency mode (ALLM). The catch is that these features live on the dearer models. Budget and mid-range QLED/LED sets often cap at 60Hz, so check the specs on the actual model, not the panel type. Note also that a static gaming HUD for hours daily is exactly the burn-in scenario above.
Winner: OLED for pure motion, but a good-value QLED gets you 120Hz gaming for less.
Sizes available
QLED wins on range. Because it is built on mainstream LCD manufacturing, QLED (and plain LED and Mini-LED) comes in the widest spread of sizes, from small bedroom sets right up to the very large 85-inch-plus panels, and at more price points. OLED is concentrated in the mid-to-large range that suits its premium positioning, so the smallest and the very cheapest big-screen options tend to be QLED or Mini-LED. If you want a compact set or a huge screen on a budget, QLED opens more doors.
Winner: QLED.
Price
QLED wins on entry price, and the gap is real. QLED spans budget to premium, so you can get into one cheaply, while OLED sits at the premium end and rarely goes truly cheap.

Those are different sizes, so it is not a like-for-like duel, but it shows the shape of it: QLED gets you a big-screen 4K set for well under a grand, whereas OLED generally starts higher. If contrast is not your top priority, a Mini-LED set is the value middle ground, brighter than entry QLED with far better dimming than plain LED.

The verdict
Both are good. The right one is the one that matches your room and your habits, not the one with the flashier spec sheet.
Get OLED if: you watch in a dim or dark room, you care most about picture quality, contrast and movies, you sit at wider angles, or you want the best motion for gaming, and your budget stretches to the premium end. You should not be running a static news ticker or HUD on it all day.
Get QLED if: your room is bright, you want maximum brightness for sport and daytime viewing, you leave static content on screen a lot (and want zero burn-in worry), you want a small set or a large screen without the premium price, or you simply want the best picture for the money. Most Australian buyers on a normal budget in a normal lounge are well served by a good QLED or Mini-LED.
