Mini-LED vs OLED: Which Picture Tech Should You Buy?
Mini-LED and OLED are the two best picture technologies you can buy right now, and neither one wins outright. They win on different things. OLED gives you perfect blacks, the best contrast and the widest viewing angles, so it is the pick for a dark room and for movies. Mini-LED goes far brighter, has no burn-in risk and scales to much larger screens, so it is the pick for a bright room and for big-screen HDR. Which one is "better" depends entirely on your room and what you watch.
The core difference is how each panel makes light. OLED is self-emissive: every pixel generates its own light and switches fully off when it needs to be black. Mini-LED is an LCD panel lit from behind by thousands of tiny LEDs, grouped into local-dimming zones that brighten and dim across the screen. Contrast and black levels: OLED
An OLED pixel that needs to be black turns off completely, which produces true black and, on paper, infinite contrast. Nothing an LCD does can match that, because a Mini-LED panel still lights black areas from behind and then tries to dim the zone covering them. With thousands of zones the control is very good, but a bright object on a dark background (subtitles, a starfield, a torch in a night scene) can still show a faint halo around it. This is called blooming. Modern Mini-LEDs have reduced it a lot, but they have not eliminated it. For pure contrast and black-level performance, OLED wins.
Brightness and HDR: Mini-LED
This is Mini-LED's headline advantage. A good Mini-LED set pushes peak brightness roughly two to three times higher than a typical OLED, and that brightness is what makes HDR highlights (sunlight, explosions, specular reflections) actually pop. It also means the picture holds up in a bright room where an OLED can look washed out. There is a caveat worth knowing: quantum-dot OLED (QD-OLED, used in premium sets like the Samsung 65" S95H) has closed a good chunk of this gap, so the brightest OLEDs are no longer as far behind as they once were. But for raw peak brightness and HDR punch, Mini-LED still leads.
Viewing angles: OLED
Because each OLED pixel emits light directly, the picture stays accurate when you move off to the side: colour and contrast hold up from a wide angle. Mini-LED, like all LCDs, loses some contrast and colour saturation as you move away from dead centre, though the better panels use wide-angle layers to soften the drop. If people watch from across a wide lounge or off to the sides, OLED is the safer choice.
Burn-in: Mini-LED
OLED carries a small risk of permanent image retention (burn-in) when the same static element stays on screen for very long stretches: a channel logo, a news ticker, a game HUD, a PC taskbar. For normal mixed viewing it is rarely an issue, and manufacturers add pixel-shifting and refresh routines to manage it. But the risk is not zero. Mini-LED has no burn-in risk at all, because its backlight and LCD layer do not degrade that way. If you leave the TV on one channel all day, use it as a shopfront display, or run static content for hours, Mini-LED removes the worry entirely.
Motion: OLED (slight edge)
OLED pixels switch state almost instantly, which gives fast motion a cleaner look with less blur. Mini-LED response is quick but not quite at that level. In practice both are strong for sport and gaming, and other factors (refresh rate, motion processing, the source) matter more day to day, so treat this as a narrow win rather than a deciding one.
Bright room vs dark room
Room lighting is the single biggest factor most buyers overlook, and it splits cleanly. In a dark or light-controlled room, OLED is in its element: the perfect blacks and contrast do their best work with the lights off, which is why it is the movie-night favourite. In a bright room with windows and daytime viewing, Mini-LED's extra brightness wins, cutting through glare where an OLED can look flat. Sizes and value at the top
Mini-LED scales to much larger screens than OLED. OLED tops out around 83 to 88 inches for most ranges, while Mini-LED comfortably goes past 100 inches. That size ceiling is why the flagship at the very top end is Mini-LED, not OLED. As of July 2026, the most expensive set on TV Rex is the Samsung 115" R95F Micro RGB at about $42,000, an advanced Mini-LED-class LCD. It is an LCD-backlight set rather than OLED because OLED is not really made at 115 inches, and because at that size in a big room you want the brightness. That giant flagship reflects size and brightness, not Mini-LED beating OLED on picture quality overall. Further down the range, Mini-LED also tends to give you more screen and more brightness for the money, while OLED commands a premium for its contrast.

Get OLED if you watch mostly in a dim or light-controlled room, care about black levels and contrast above raw brightness, and want the best all-round picture quality for film and TV. It is the connoisseur's panel for a dedicated viewing space.
Get Mini-LED if your room is bright, you want maximum HDR brightness, you want a very large screen, you show static content for hours and do not want to think about burn-in, or you simply want more screen and more brightness for your money. For most Australian living rooms with real daylight, that combination is why Mini-LED is the more practical buy.
