TV Gaming Features Explained: VRR, ALLM, G-Sync and FreeSync
If you game on a PS5, an Xbox Series X or a PC and you are staring at a spec sheet full of acronyms, here is the short answer. For a smooth, responsive picture you want four things on the TV: a 120Hz panel, HDMI 2.1 (with enough ports for your gear), VRR and ALLM. VRR keeps the picture free of tearing when your frame rate wobbles, ALLM drops the TV into its low-lag game mode automatically, and HDMI 2.1 plus a 120Hz panel is what lets you run 4K at 120 frames per second. G-Sync and FreeSync are just branded flavours of VRR, and they matter most on PC.

VRR: what it is and why it matters
VRR stands for Variable Refresh Rate. A normal TV refreshes at a fixed rate, say 60 or 120 times a second. A game does not always deliver frames at a steady pace, so when a demanding scene drops the frame rate, the mismatch shows up as screen tearing (a torn line across the image) or stutter (a hitch in the motion).
VRR fixes this by letting the TV change its refresh rate on the fly to track whatever the console or PC is sending. Frames arrive and get shown when they are ready, so the tear and the stutter go away. It is the single feature that does the most for how a game feels in motion.
The main thing to know: VRR is not one standard. It comes in a few forms, and a given TV might support one, some, or all of them.
The three flavours of VRR
You will see VRR advertised under three different names. They all do the same core job. The difference is who certifies them and which source they are aimed at.

HDMI 2.1 VRR is the version built into the HDMI standard. Both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X and S use this to get variable refresh from the console.
FreeSync is AMD's version. It is the console-friendly one: Xbox consoles support FreeSync directly, and it is common on AMD-powered PCs. Some TVs also carry AMD's "FreeSync Premium" tier, which adds requirements around low-frame-rate handling.
G-Sync Compatible is Nvidia's certification. It means Nvidia has tested the TV and confirmed VRR works cleanly with its graphics cards. Note the wording: "G-Sync Compatible" is Nvidia validating a display that uses the open adaptive-sync approach, which is different from the older full "G-Sync" that needed a dedicated hardware module inside the display. For TVs, the compatible badge is the one you will see.
For most console players this distinction does not change your buying decision much, because the consoles lean on HDMI 2.1 VRR and FreeSync. G-Sync Compatible is the label to look for if you are also plugging in an Nvidia gaming PC.
ALLM and input lag
ALLM stands for Auto Low Latency Mode. Left to its own devices, a TV runs a lot of image processing, and that processing adds delay. ALLM lets the console tell the TV "a game is playing", and the TV automatically switches into its game mode, which strips out the heavy processing to cut the delay. You get the low-lag mode without diving into menus every time, and it switches back when you go to watch a film.
That delay it is fighting is input lag: the gap between pressing a button and seeing the result on screen. High input lag makes a game feel sluggish or floaty, and it is the difference-maker in anything twitchy or competitive. Game mode reduces it by turning off the processing that would otherwise sit between the input and the picture. On a good gaming TV in game mode, measured input lag typically lands in the low tens of milliseconds or below, well under what the same set does with full processing on. 4K120: what it needs
4K120 means 4K resolution running at 120 frames per second. It gives you sharper detail and smoother, more responsive motion in games that support it. To get it you need two things together:
- an HDMI 2.1 port, which has the bandwidth to carry that much data, and
- a 120Hz panel, so the screen can actually display 120 frames a second.
A TV can have a 120Hz panel but only HDMI 2.0 ports, in which case it cannot take a 4K120 signal from a console. The pattern: on console, HDMI 2.1 VRR and ALLM are the features doing the work, plus a 120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 for 4K120. On PC, the FreeSync or G-Sync Compatible badge tells you the TV has been matched to your graphics card.
What to look for when buying
For a gaming-focused TV, run down this list:
- A 120Hz panel. This is the foundation for 4K120 and smoother motion. A 60Hz set will run games, but you lose the high-frame-rate ceiling.
- HDMI 2.1, and enough of it. Some TVs put HDMI 2.1 on only one or two ports, and one of those may double as the eARC port for a soundbar. If you are connecting a console plus a PC, count the full-bandwidth ports, not just the total.
- VRR. Confirmed variable refresh, ideally with the flavour that matches your gear (HDMI 2.1 VRR or FreeSync for console, G-Sync Compatible if you have an Nvidia PC).
- ALLM. So the set flips to game mode by itself.
- Low input lag in game mode. The lower the better for responsiveness.
The catch worth knowing
Gaming features are not evenly spread across the range. Cheaper and older sets often stop at 60Hz with HDMI 2.0, which rules out 4K120 and sometimes VRR entirely. Full HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, VRR and ALLM together tend to sit on the mid-range and up, and even then a maker might limit how many ports carry the full feature set. Support also varies model to model within the same brand, so check the exact model's specs rather than assuming the brand "has" a feature.
