Motion Rate 200? Decoding Fake Refresh-Rate Numbers on Australian TVs

If a TV shelf ticket in JB Hi-Fi or Harvey Norman shouts "Motion Rate 200", that 200 is not the refresh rate. It is a marketing number built by multiplying the real panel speed up with processing. The number that actually matters is the native refresh rate, and for TVs sold in Australia that is almost always 50Hz, 60Hz, 100Hz or 120Hz. The quick rule: any motion figure above 120 (setting aside the genuine 144Hz native panels on some gaming TVs) is a processed marketing figure, not the panel's true speed. Below is how each brand inflates it, how to find the real Hz, and when the real Hz is worth paying for.

Native refresh rate is the only number that counts

The native refresh rate is a physical property of the panel: how many times per second it can draw a completely new image. It is fixed in the hardware and it cannot be exaggerated.

Australia has a 50Hz heritage from the old PAL free-to-air standard, so you will still see 50Hz and 100Hz panels alongside the 60Hz and 120Hz numbers more common in US marketing. For a 4K TV sold here, the native rate lands in one of two tiers:

  • Entry and mid-range sets: 50Hz or 60Hz native.
  • Premium and gaming-focused sets: 100Hz or 120Hz native.

There is effectively nothing sold in between. A handful of gaming-focused models push to 144Hz over HDMI, but on consumer TVs the native ceiling is 120Hz. So if a spec or a salesperson quotes you a refresh rate that is not one of 50, 60, 100, 120 (or occasionally 144), it is not the native rate.

How the big "motion" numbers are built

Manufacturers take the real native Hz and dress it up using picture processing that reduces visible motion blur. The tricks include backlight scanning (flashing the backlight in sync with the frames), black frame insertion (slipping a black frame between real frames), and motion interpolation (generating extra in-between frames, the "soap opera effect"). None of these change how fast the panel physically redraws. They change how the motion looks, then the marketing team attaches a bigger number to describe the combined effect.

That is why a 60Hz panel can be sold as "Motion Rate 120" and a 120Hz panel as "Motion Rate 240". The figure is real in the sense that processing is happening, but it is not a refresh rate and you cannot compare it across brands. Each brand uses its own scale, and some push the number 4x or higher above the native rate.

What each brand calls it

The terms change, the trick does not. Here is how the major brands sold in Australia label their motion processing versus what it actually tells you.

Brand term you will see What it really means
Samsung "Motion Rate" (MR), e.g. MR 200 A processed motion figure, not the native Hz. Historically it ran at roughly double the native rate, but treat that as a loose hint and confirm the real Hz.
LG "TruMotion" LG's motion-smoothing and interpolation branding. It describes processing, not the panel's native refresh rate.
Sony "Motionflow" (and XR-branded motion terms on newer Bravia sets) Sony's motion processing name. Separate from the native Hz, which you have to look up in the plain spec.
Hisense and TCL inflated motion figures Both use their own big "motion" style numbers layered on top of a 50/60 or 100/120 panel. The number is marketing; find the native Hz.
Any figure above 120 (bar the genuine 144Hz native panels on some gaming TVs) Not a refresh rate at all. It is processing.

For Hisense and TCL in particular, the safe move is to ignore whatever the ticket calls the motion figure and hunt down the plain native refresh rate, because the marketing wording varies between ranges and model years.

How to find the true native Hz

  1. Look for the plain spec. On the manufacturer page or the detailed spec sheet, find the line that says "refresh rate" or "native refresh rate". That number, not the motion label, is the truth. If it reads 50, 60, 100 or 120, you have it.
  2. Assume the lower tier when only a motion number is quoted. If the box, ticket or listing only shows a big motion figure and never states a native Hz, assume it is the cheaper 50/60Hz tier. A brand with a genuine 100/120Hz panel almost always advertises that fact, because it costs more to build.

  4. Ignore the doubling shortcut on its own. The old "halve the Motion Rate" trick is only ever a rough hint and brands have muddied it, so never rely on it in place of the real spec.

When the real refresh rate actually matters

A true 100/120Hz panel is worth paying for in two cases:

  • Fast live sport. More real frames per second means cleaner motion when the camera pans across a footy field or follows a fast ball. If sport is your main use, the native Hz is one of the specs that genuinely earns its keep. See our picks in best TVs for sport in Australia.

For everyone else, a high native Hz matters less than the marketing suggests:

  • Movies run at 24fps. A film is mastered at 24 frames per second, so it does not need a fast panel. A 60Hz set displays movies perfectly well, and heavy motion smoothing on films creates the soap opera effect that many people dislike.
  • Casual free-to-air and streaming is fine on 50/60Hz. Broadcast TV and most streaming content sits at 25/30fps or below, so the extra headroom of a 120Hz panel goes unused during ordinary viewing.

The short version

Read past the motion label to the native refresh rate. For an AU 4K TV that is 50/60Hz on cheaper sets and 100/120Hz on premium and gaming sets, with nothing in between. Pay for the higher tier if you watch a lot of sport or game at 120fps. If you mostly watch movies and stream, a 60Hz panel is plenty, whatever the "Motion Rate 200" sticker wants you to believe.
