What NBN Speed Do You Need for 4K Streaming (and Why Your TV Keeps Buffering)
A single 4K stream typically needs somewhere around 25 Mbps of steady bandwidth, so an NBN 50 plan is a comfortable baseline for one or two 4K streams, and NBN 100 or above gives you headroom for a busy house. That is the short answer. The longer one, and the more useful one if your new TV keeps buffering, is that your plan is often not the problem at all. Most 4K buffering comes down to wifi, evening congestion, or the streaming app itself, and none of those get fixed by paying for a faster tier.
How much bandwidth each stream actually uses
Streaming quality scales with bandwidth, and the jump to 4K is where it gets demanding. As a rough guide:
- SD needs only a few Mbps, often under 3.
- HD (1080p) commonly sits around 5 Mbps.
- 4K / HDR is the hungry one. Streaming services usually recommend somewhere in the range of 15 to 25 Mbps for a 4K stream.
Treat those as ballpark figures, not hard limits. The exact number varies by service, by the codec they use, and even scene to scene (a fast-moving action sequence eats more bandwidth than a static talking-head shot, because there is more picture data changing per second). What matters is that a 4K stream wants a steady chunk of bandwidth, not a big burst, so consistency counts more than a headline peak speed.
Mapping that to NBN speed tiers
Australia's NBN plans come in standard speed tiers, and the useful question is how many simultaneous 4K streams (plus everything else the house is doing) each one comfortably supports.
- NBN 25 is marginal for 4K. One stream might just fit, but add someone else on a video call or a second TV and it will struggle. Fine for HD, tight for 4K.
- NBN 50 is a sensible baseline for a 4K household. It handles one or two 4K streams alongside normal browsing and the odd download without breaking a sweat.
- NBN 100 / 250 is for households running several 4K streams at once, or a busy home with lots of devices, big downloads, gaming, and 4K TV all happening together.
One caveat that matters more than the tier name: the max speed on the plan is not the speed you get at 8pm. Evening (busy-hour) speeds are what count for streaming, because that is when everyone is watching. Providers publish a "typical evening speed" for each plan, and that figure is a far better predictor of a smooth 4K stream than the theoretical maximum. Check it before you sign up, and lean on the evening number.
The real reasons your TV buffers
If you already have plenty of speed on paper and the stream still stutters or drops to a blurry, soft picture, the plan is probably innocent. The usual culprits, roughly in order of how often they are to blame:
- Wifi. This is the big one. The signal weakens with distance and through walls, and the crowded 2.4GHz band is often congested by neighbours and other devices. A TV three rooms from the router on 2.4GHz can be starved of bandwidth even on a fast plan.
- Too many devices at once. Phones auto-updating, a console downloading a game, someone else on a 4K stream in another room. They all share the same pipe.
- The app or service. Streaming apps drop the quality when they sense a wobbly connection, which is why the picture goes soft rather than freezing. Some services also throttle at peak times, and an app can simply misbehave until it is restarted.
- The TV's own wifi chip. Built-in wifi on some smart TVs is weak, so the TV pulls a poorer signal than your phone does standing in the same spot.
Fixes, in the order worth trying
Work through these roughly top to bottom. The first one solves most cases.
- Wire the TV with ethernet. A cabled connection to the TV is the single best fix for buffering. It sidesteps every wifi problem in one move. If running a cable is impractical, a powerline adapter (which sends the connection over your electrical wiring) or a mesh node near the TV gets you most of the way there.
- If you must use wifi, use 5GHz and get closer to the router. The 5GHz band is faster and less congested than 2.4GHz, though it does not travel as far. Position matters more than most people expect.
- Check nothing else is hogging the connection. Pause big downloads, and see whether another device is mid-update while you are trying to watch.
- Restart the router. Unglamorous, but it clears a surprising number of transient faults.
- Drop the stream quality to test. If lowering the app to HD stops the buffering, you have confirmed the problem is bandwidth or wifi, not the TV or the app, and you know where to focus.
Make sure the 4K is actually switched on
One last thing to rule out before you blame the internet: the TV, the app, and your subscription all have to support 4K from that particular service. A 4K TV does not automatically get 4K from everything. You generally need the right app installed, and on many services the higher-priced subscription tier to unlock 4K and HDR at all. If a stream looks soft on a 4K set, check the plan you are paying for on that service before assuming your NBN is at fault.
