Best 12V and caravan TVs in Australia: what to look for on the road

If you want a TV that runs off your caravan, camper or boat without an inverter, look for four things: native 12V DC power so it runs straight off the battery, a low power draw that will not flatten your bank overnight, a travel-friendly size (usually 19 to 32 inches), and reception you can actually get on the road, which for remote spots means a satellite setup, not just an antenna.

A native-12V set is the one that matters most. Most household TVs run on 240V mains, so to power one in a van you need an inverter to convert your 12V battery up to 240V. That is an extra box to buy, and every conversion loses some energy as heat, so you draw more from the battery than the TV actually uses. A TV built to run on 12V DC skips all of that and pulls power straight from your battery or solar system. Off-grid, that efficiency is the difference between watching the news and rationing your amp-hours.

Why 12V beats a 240V TV plus an inverter

The maths is simple. A 240V TV needs an inverter, and a typical inverter runs at around 85 to 90 percent efficiency, so you lose roughly 10 to 15 percent of the power just in the conversion. You also pay for the inverter itself, find somewhere to mount it, and add another point of failure. A native-12V TV wires directly into the van's 12V circuit, draws less, and is one less thing to go wrong. The one time a 240V TV makes sense is if you are usually plugged into powered sites at caravan parks. Mains hook-up runs a 240V set fine, and if that is your style you can bring a normal indoor TV. But the moment you free camp, the 12V set earns its keep.

Size and weight for the space you have

Van and boat interiors are tight, and every TV has to be mounted somewhere it will not block a walkway or a window. For most rigs, 19 to 24 inches suits a bunk, an over-bench spot or a boat cabin, while 27 to 32 inches works in a larger caravan or motorhome lounge. Go by the wall space and viewing distance, not by what you would buy for the living room at home. Power draw and battery life

This is the number that governs how long you can watch before you need to recharge. A small 12V LED TV in the 19 to 24 inch range typically draws somewhere around 20 to 40 watts, which at 12V is roughly 2 to 3.5 amps. On a 100 amp-hour battery you could, in theory, run it for many hours, but you are sharing that battery with the fridge, lights, water pump and phone charging, so the TV's draw is only part of the picture. Check the wattage before you buy, favour a set on the lower end of the range, and remember that brightness and volume both push consumption up. Reception on the road

A great TV is useless if it cannot pull in a signal, and reception is where van life gets tricky. In and near towns, a decent caravan antenna, either a directional aerial you point at the transmitter or an omni-directional type, will pull in free-to-air digital channels. The further you get from a transmitter, the weaker and patchier that signal becomes, and in large parts of remote and regional Australia there is no terrestrial reception at all.

A TV in a moving vehicle lives a harder life than one bolted to a lounge-room wall. Corrugated roads, vibration and the odd sharp stop all work against a screen that is not held down properly. Look for a set that mounts on a secure bracket, ideally one that locks or can be pinned so it does not swing or drop while you drive. Some travellers pack the TV away in transit and remount it at camp. Either way, the mount matters as much as the TV, and a light set is far kinder to a bracket than a heavy one.

Media playback for off-grid nights

When you are parked somewhere with no signal and no data, a TV with built-in DVD or USB media playback keeps working when streaming cannot. A USB port lets you load movies and shows onto a stick and play them straight off the TV, and a built-in DVD drive means your disc collection still earns its space in the cupboard. Off-grid, this is genuinely useful, because the nights you most want something to watch are often the nights you have the least connectivity.

Streaming on the road: handy, not guaranteed

Plenty of 12V TVs are now smart TVs, and streaming is great when you have the connection for it. The catch is that streaming needs mobile data or wifi, and out on the road that is not a given. Treat streaming as a bonus for when you have signal, and lean on free-to-air plus your own media library as the reliable baseline.
